Affordable Birkies August 7, 2010 T. Rottmayer (Columbus, OH United States) I've been wearing Birkies since the early '90s, when I bought my first pair at a discount shop in Germany. These are licensed from Birkenstock, and are, IMHO, indistinguishable from the "real thing", except for the price. Well worth a try, if you've been thinking about Birkies but didn't like their price.
great for newbies, but Birkenstock wearers beware July 7, 2010 I. Baldyga (Connecticut, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Bought these at a bargain price because I desperately needed a new pair of sandals with arch support. In the past I always wore actual Birkenstocks, but the outlet store near me closed, so I've been searching online for good prices. These shoes aren't actual Birkenstocks (I think they are made in China, not Germany), but the footbed is licensed by Birkenstock. I assume this means that it's held to some standard of quality. The good news is that I would have to agree: the footbed is of fine quality.
As far as the suede straps go... well. I liked the idea of the suede at first because it's incredibly soft compared to the toughened leather of typical Birkenstock sandals. But the problem is that it very quickly stretches out. I had to keep adjusting the sandal straps tighter and tighter to fit my foot (and I have big, wide, womens size 10 feet!). They are so stretched out by now that I might just have to bore holes in the suede to make them fit correctly.
When I bought these sandals, I expected them to last at least the whole summer. I've been wearing them every day since May, and it's now July. I wore these shoes to a theme park/water park the other day. They got wet, and let me tell you- the suede doesn't hold up at all with the water. They are now tough and yucky. And too big. Essentially they are now my "junk" sandals. I went online and bought a new pair of something else.
Bottom line: a nice sandal if you are new to Birkenstocks shoes and want a comfy sandal for occasional use. But a disappointment if you want the wear-all-summer Birkenstock quality.

Newalk licensed Birkenstock sandals May 10, 2010 Brenda E. Baum (Dallastown PA) I really like these sandals. They feel great & for the price, they can't be beat.
Happy with my flimsy edition Birkenstocks May 5, 2010 bpbleus I bought these as a replacement for my first pair of Newalks - no desire to spend $50 to get new soles under a $30 pair of shoes! This is the disposable version of Birkenstock.
So how do they compare with the real deal? The foot bed is really the same and the soles look the same and wear out within a similar short time frame (always been the weak point of Birkenstock; have them resoled with fibram soles for extra mileage and 'off-road' use). The leather top, though, is really flimsy. It won't stay up. You can't just slip in and run. It stretches out. I'd think the leather won't survive a second round (after resoling). On the positive side, flimsy means you are less likely to get blisters (when walking bare feet, but that's what they are for, I suppose). Betula, the previous cheap line of Birkenstocks, was definitely of higher quality.
The bottom line: it's a good deal if you can get them for less than $30.
